A bit nippy in the mornings, I’ll grant you, but the days have been sensational.
It’s mid-May, so I suppose that we’ve got to expect these cold mornings. But the best thing about it, though, is the fish don’t seem to mind them either.
Decent reddies are starting to show up at long last and there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of trout or cod at the minute either.
The big worry now though is rain. We really need a decent drop in the not too distant future for those trout to spawn in decent numbers.
Trout have only just started to come back into our streams in reasonable numbers in the past 12 months or so, so it’s extremely important we get another good spawning run to keep that momentum going.
Redfin have only just returned in decent numbers to most of our popular lakes this season as well so a decent drop of rain might be just what the fisho ordered to keep them on track too. The previous three or four years were crap unless you were a cod fisho, with cod being the only freshwater fish being caught consistently in that time frame.
I know we can’t actually control the weather, but maybe we should pick a date where all fishos could do a rain dance to try to ensure happy fishing for the next year or two.
Maybe it could be tomorrow … oh, hold on, that mightn’t go down so well on the home front.
Happy Mother’s Day to all you mums out there.
And if you’re a fishing mum, I hope you catch a ripper.

AT A GLANCE
Dartmouth – is shaping up really well for the Dart cup in a few weeks (June 9, 10,11) with pretty consistent reports of trout being caught.
Most are on top with tassies, king cobras and stings in particular doing the business.
It’s always handy to have a lure down a bit though too so don’t pack your downriggers away just yet.
Streams – in general are fishing really well with small spinners and small minnows as good as any.
Bait drifters and fly fishos are also reporting reasonable numbers of fish.
That shouldn’t change right through to the seasons close unless there’s some major fluctuations in river flows for one reason or another.
Jindabyne – sure fished well for John Rezuc last week, with John getting his bag limit in quality fish most days so there’s another spot worth a go.
All were caught on “Stings”.
Anyhow, wherever you head, hope you have a great weekend.
