The two-year-old colt, trained by Darren Weir, took out the Jack Maher Classic (1200m) at Wodonga by a nose, ahead of Wired and Sea Pirate.
O’Connor said it wasn’t uncommon for winners of the classic to go on and have strong careers as three-year-olds – and it helps having a premier trainer like Weir behind him.
“Darren is Victoria’s leading trainer at the moment, so it’s great to see him target a key race in Wodonga,” he said.
“The key to the Jack Maher is to keep an eye on where the horses progress, particularly as three-year-olds.
“There’s normally a bit of a tradition of winners of this race going on to run in the metros, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens from here.”
Jack Hill rode consecutive winners on Saturday, taking Prevailing Winds past the post in the Jack Maher Classic before backing up aboard Smash the Gong in the Denise Casey Handicap (1200m).
