After a disappointing 107-86 loss at the hands of the previously winless Canberra Gunners on Saturday night, the Bandits split the road trip with a 98-90 win over the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence.
Other results around the league falling favourably means the Bandits still have time to sort out their defensive woes, but the clock is ticking.
Not for the first time, it was a disastrous third period against the Gunners, in which the Bandits gave up 36 points to 17, that cost them a valuable win.
Import JT Terrell's introduction to the SEABL continued to be rocky, seeing limited minutes and fouling out against the Gunners before being ejected against the BA CoE after a fiery third period exchange.
Head coach Brad Chalmers was also ejected as a result of the melee, having picked up an additional technical foul earlier in the game.
Making matters worse was the absence of Sawyer Dearborn, who didn't play due to continuing ankle problems, and Darcy Harding rolling his ankle as well.
Despite the setbacks, Deba George (33 points, four rebounds, five assists) and TJ Robinson (20 points, 17 rebounds, four steals) kept cool and guided the Bandits to a crucial win.
Chalmers said the Bandits had been outplayed against the Gunners, but did well to regroup on Sunday.
“We had moments where we played OK, but we were outplayed in the third, which was frustrating,” he said.
“But you have to regroup and get back into is as best you can, we did that reasonably well on Sunday.”
Left with only reserve Kailou George on the bench after injuries and ejections on Sunday, Chalmers said he would be contacting SEABL officials about the standard of refereeing.
“The standard of refereeing was poor over both games, that's something we'll take up with the league,” he said.
“The game got out of control in the third quarter.”
Chalmers also backed Terrell to find his feet after struggling during his first month with the team.
“JT has to stay with it, it’s all about energy with him,” he said.
“It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for him, he hasn’t really had time to settle and do a pre-season with us, so he does have a bit of an excuse.
“That said, he is here to do a job.
“I know he'll come good, he just hasn't really been able to get himself into a rhythm with us yet.”
