Now the treasurer, Mrs McMahon never would have imagined back then just how many vehicles would be part of the club’s anniversary event 49 years on.
“It’s a bit amazing to think it’s been 50 years,” she said.
“Some people who had vintage cars who already belonged to a car club in Melbourne decided it would be good to start a club in Albury.
“My husband and I had an Austin Meteor for a number of years, and I have an Austin mini now – that I’ve driven around for 20 years or more.”
Mrs McMahon’s little blue car was one of more than 300 on display at Gateway Lakes on Sunday.
The last of the car club members from across NSW, drawn to the Border to be part of the dual anniversary weekend and Council of Heritage Motor Clubs NSW rally, were farewelled on Monday.
Mrs McMahon said there was nothing but positive feedback from the visitors.
“I think the attraction is just the social aspect of it and the friends you make, the places you go and just meeting other people,” she said.
“We have got a lot of new members, but not so much younger members.
“Going back when the club first started, there were a lot of children and families involved.
“What we have to aim for is to get younger members.”
