MAKING Monument Hill an alcohol prohibited area for a 12-hour period on Anzac Day has been described as a “knee-jerk” reaction to an isolated incident.

Albury councillor Murray King succeeded with a move to add Monument Hill to the city's list of grog prohibited zones despite strong opposition from council colleague and former Albury RSL president, Cr Graham Docksey.
Cr Docksey said the push wasn't supported by the veteran community based on feedback he received at an RSL sub-branch meeting on Sunday.
“I know their feelings, I spoke to them,” he said.
“No one in this chamber was at the dawn service and saw this happen.
“This is a knee-jerk reaction to a simple one-off issue and a waste of council time and effort putting a sign up.
“It won't be seen by people coming up the hill in the dark.”
Noreuil Park is the other prominent public space subject to an alcohol ban.
It was introduced in the late 2000s in response to a major brawl on Australia Day and two years ago was extended at the request of police.
Cr Henk van de Ven failed in a bid to have the matter deferred for a fortnight to allow for more information as part of a report on alcohol free and prohibited zones in the city.
“I fully support this, but I also understand it is an iconic area of Albury,” he said.
“We've already complained about the number of telephone poles, electricity poles, wiring and everything else up there.
“We've got an absolutely fantastic master-plan in place and now we are potentially going to put extra signs up there.”
Cr King said he stood by his decision to instigate the ban in response to reports people were drinking alcohol at the Anzac Day dawn service last month.
“To see people drinking at this solemn time is shameful to say the least,” he said.
“I don't think we need to give people a kick-start at that time of the morning.
“There is a lot of public drunkenness in the street walking around on Anzac Day and there is somewhat of a blind eye being shown to it.”
