The March fundraiser, run by Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre, meant all students were able to access the lessons – something Belvoir’s principal Jamie Gay believed was invaluable.
“The students just love it – Jeremy, because of his disability, has more freedom in the water than he has on land,” he said.
“There’s less chance of him falling over and hurting himself, and he can participate actively in the water on an equal basis with everybody else.
“It’s such a terrific benefit for our students and for the school.
“If we didn’t have this, the costs would have to be passed on to parents.”
WSLC swim lessons director Mandy Sawyer said the centre fundraiser continued to raise thousands for Belvoir every year.
“The Swimathon was a great, fun day – one of my swim teachers raised $1200 alone,” she said.
“It allows for lessons in term two and three for these guys, and there’s always happy faces.”
