Mr Bolton, 21, will represent Victoria in the Sports Turf Association national graduate awards, with the interviews to be held next month in Queensland.
Wodonga TAFE nominated the leading hand, who has completed Certificate III in Sports Turf Management and is now studying for his diploma while continuing his job at the racecourse.
“I’ve got good family involvement in racing and it was just a natural progression to do an apprenticeship,” he said. “When the opportunity came up at the racecourse I just jumped at it.
“I enjoy working outside and dealing with the horses.”
The awards are designed to recognise students who have excelled in their studies and are employed to prepare sports fields, wickets, bowling greens or racetracks. They also aim to identify potential industry leaders.
The Victorian committee chose Mr Bolton to be the state’s nomination.
“Joe showed huge commitment to the industry and a variety of working skills at his interview,” the state committee said.
