The 30-year-old will return to court on Monday charged with a string of offences, including the Lavington smash and allegations he stole a Ford Territory with three young kids inside and led police on a 180km/h chase down the wrong side of the Hume Highway.

He is alleged to have jumped into the driver’s seat with two other offenders and three young children inside as their mother spoke to police on the side of the road.

The March 14 incident followed a burglary in Wagga earlier in the day that Bartel was also allegedly involved in, and the Territory is said to have been stuffed with stolen goods.

Co-offender Eric Chew, 19, narrowly escaped jail time last week for his role in the break-in.

Chew broke into the Tolland home, allegedly with Bartel and a teen offender, after the occupant left the house.

A Finding Nemo DVD, two laptops, two phones, a camera, ties, a sword and cigarettes with a total value of $4000 were taken and later transferred into the Territory.

Chew was a passenger during the 25 minute pursuit and later gave police information about himself and co-accused. 

Lawyer Tim Hemsley told Albury Local Court Chew had a lengthy criminal past, but had been given a rare job opportunity involving farm work. 

It was unlikely such an offer would ever be made again, he said. 

He was jailed for 10 months, wholly suspended, fined $2700 and banned from driving for 10 months.
