Two people are dead and another is in hospital after a serious crash on the Hume Freeway at Winton on Sunday afternoon.
A man and a woman travelling in a Holden sedan with a club permit plate attempted to cross the freeway at Bowers Road when their car was hit by a south-bound grey Toyota 86 sedan.
The elderly pair in the Holden died at the scene.
Sergeant Colin Anderson said a passenger in the Toyota was also hurt.
“The driver of that car is okay and the female passenger has been airlifted to Melbourne,” he said.
“The cause of the collision is still subject to investigation … everything will be taken into consideration – the weather and traffic.”
Ambulance Media spokesman John Mullen said paramedics treated a woman in her 30s.
“She was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital with pelvic injuries in a serious but stable condition,” he said.
Traffic, increased with attendees in the area for the Historic Winton event, was diverted off the freeway for four hours.
