Wombats have caused one of the upsets of the Hockey Albury-Wodonga (HAW) division one men’s season by upstaging ladder leader Magpies 2-0 on Sunday.

It was a very tight game for the first 10 minutes in the wet conditions between Magpies and Wombats, with neither side willing to give up the ball.
Wombats were able to convert from a short corner, despite tough defence from Magpies, with a deflection from Angus Kilby.
Magpies had several opportunities, with three short corners awarded consecutively, however no goals were scored.
Wombats were awarded a few more short corners, but Magpies’ defence was too strong again as Wombats headed into the second half 1-0 up.
Both teams started the second half with high intensity and it was Kilby once again scoring for Wombats to hand his side a much-needed 2-0 victory.
In the other men’s matches, CR United drew 3-3 with Falcons, while Wodonga smashed Norths 6-1.
Meanwhile, Norths caused the upset of the day in the women’s competition with a 1-0 win over Wodonga.
Belinda Burke scored from a short corner after both teams played much of the game in each other’s 25.
Danny McLeish and Shae Billingsley both had a strong games in defence for Wodonga, while Emma Knagge and Emerald Beath were tough in Norths’ midfield.
In other division one clashes, Magpies thrashes Wombats 6-0, while Falcons were too good for CR United, coming away with a 3-0 victory.
