The Victorian government should not expect a “free ride” when it comes to fixing the North East rail line, federal Transport Minister Darren Chester has warned.

The minister was asked in question time by Indi MP Cathy McGowan to help lead all relevant groups develop a plan together.
“It’s a matter yet to be resolved and has made an already complex problem even more so,” Ms McGowan said.
Mr Chester said the government would consult with the North East community and Australian Rail Track Corporation in the weeks and months ahead.
“It’s perfectly normal for the federal government to expect a state government to make a contribution to a major transport project of this scale,” he said. “The premier can’t expect a free ride on this … the Andrews government will have to come to the party.”
