And after all the lifts, turns and, er, strips, everyone cheered when they heard the event had raised a preliminary $65,000 for Cancer Council NSW.
Olivia Aughton, who represented Albury Tigers, and her partner Chay Styles won the Judges’ Choice award with their quick-step combination inspired by The Great Gatsby.
The Border Mail editor Xavier Mardling and Maddi Bullock took out the Highest Fundraiser prize, contributing more than $5600 to the cause while Albury Thunder’s Jon Huggett and Paula Thompson claimed the People’s Choice trophy.
Nine community identities from sport, media and business paired with professional dancers to present a dance routine after only eight weeks’ practice.
Each star also pledged to raise a minimum of $2500 during this time, a target they all exceeded.
Ms Aughton said she was thrilled to win the judging honours, having averaged about six hours of dance lessons a week.
“All that hard work, sweat – no tears, but a lot of sweat – paid off in the end, so it was great,” she said.
Although she had no dancing experience, Ms Aughton always loved drama and performed in musicals at school.
"So it was nice to be back in front of a crowd on stage,” she said. “I think for me the most challenging was getting the footwork correct, getting the arms to go with the legs, I suppose. My partner Chay, he was super-supportive.”
NSW Cancer Council community relations co-ordinator Emma Ryall said the event, now in its fourth year, had already raised $11,000 more than last year’s Dance for Cancer.
“We just really appreciate it and look forward to continue investing in support services in the Border region,” she said.
Mr Mardling, whose Rocky Horror-themed jazz number saw him strip down to lingerie, said he was honoured to take part in such a worthwhile cause.
“I made some great friends along the way,” he said.
“But I’m sorry if the fishnet stockings gave anybody a bit of a fright.”
