Wangaratta Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Patrick Murray said the boy was riding the quad bike by himself when the crash occurred about 11.50am.
It is believed the vehicle rolled during the crash, which occurred on a working farm property on Kerrs Road.
“WorkSafe and police are working together to investigate,” Acting Sergeant Murray said.
“(The boy) was airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.”
Multiple ambulances rushed to the property, before the air ambulance was called and landed in the paddock of a neighbouring property.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the boy’s condition had been downgraded to serious, but stable.
He said he had suffered abdominal injuries and burns from the incident.
Police would not reveal the circumstances of the crash.
Officers also attended a car crash on Buckland Valley Road, but no one was seriously injured after the car rolled.
