This year, organisers of Port Fairy Winter Weekends have created a program that includes all the events people have grown to love, together with a series of winter food workshops that’ll see experts and aficionados impart their knowledge on equally enthusiastic participants.

The pristine landscape and small-town lifestyle has lured award-winning chef Matt Dempsey (Conlan’s Wine Store) back to his home turf and during the festival he will deliver two in-depth sessions: a deluxe three-hour wine tasting class featuring iconic bottles from France and Australia.and a cooking workshop focusing on slow cooked roasts, where participants are the apprentices.
Native plants are an untapped source of flavour and nutrition in our largely colonial Australian diet. Join Worn Gundigj for an evening tour and dinner at Tower Hill, a delicious way to learn about the tastes and benefits of indigenous plant ingredients.
Sterling Espresso Bar on Bank Street imports some of the world’s highest grade coffee beans and this winter you can master the art of home brewing, learning manual methods including v60 pour over and Aeropress.
There’s fresh cheesemaking workshops with sustainable food expert Kylie Treble, where you can make ricotta style cheese, mascarpone and dairy keffir and labne from homemade yogurt.
Catch your dinner at fishing clinics hosted by the Port Fairy Angling Club; flip a crepe in the artisan creperie; enjoy dessert and Depp in the Chocolat foodie film night; pick up winter produce, preserves and more at the Port Fairy community market.
Port Fairy Winter Weekends kicks off on the June long weekend with the famous (and ridiculously cute) Dachshund Dash, then continues every second weekend in June and July, with everything from kids fishing clinics, to film screenings in the original old school cinema, and music of all genres at the inaugural vinyl swap meet.
Illuminate your imagination when the lights return as part of Light Up Port Fairy, an exciting, interactive series of events. Venture out after dark to discover a different light installation each week, dotted around town.
Then there’s the winter solstice dawn swim, a twilight market at the local primary school, toy making workshops with Port Fairy Men’s Shed, and mulled wine, hot chocolate and a lantern parade during the closing party in July.
