Porter has been accepted into teaching at East Carolina University.
It boasts famous alumni, including Sandra Bullock.
“I found out the news probably a couple of weeks ago and I applied back in November,” Porter said following the club’s win over Myrtleford.
“I haven’t decided on a date yet, but it will be in about five or six weeks.”
The former VFL player was then quizzed if that would end his season.
“No, I don’t think so, I’ll look at possibly coming back if we make it through to finals,” he said.
“I’ll just have to look at how the (university) programs are.”

- Josh Porter
Porter was outstanding against the Saints, kicking three goals.
But it’s his workrate which complements boom forward Michael Newton.
“Josh Porter, his leads are 80 metres,” coach Dean Stone said.
“You tell me a bloke in the league that’s going to stop a six-foot four and a half, six-foot five bloke on the lead.”
It was feared Porter’s season might have been over the previous week against North Albury.
“Yeah, it was only a dislocation (of my finger), so it was a lucky break,” he said.
“It felt good today, I had a splint made up for it.”
Porter’s news follows confirmation star defender Michael Bordignon won’t play every game in the second round after moving to Adelaide for work.
“I moved over there three weeks ago and this was my first game back,” he said.
“I’ll come home on and off now.”
Wangaratta has been the most improved team and sits seven-two at the halfway mark.
