Wangaratta had the better of the early exchanges, before Mackensy Mathews put City in front in the 24th minute.
A three-minute blitz to end the half saw the lead blow out to 3-0 after Zoe Jackson’s finish was quickly followed by a terrific strike from Bridget McDiarmid.
Boomers kept second spot with a clinical 8-1 triumph against the third-placed Wodonga Diamonds.
Joey Cartwright, Torey Saisanid and Beth Kennedy all scored doubles for Boomers, while Jovana Bukvic was the lone scorer for Diamonds.
Albury United held off Myrtleford to register a 3-2 victory and St Pats took care of Cobram 4-1.
Melrose and Albury Hotspurs had the bye.
