VICTORIAN drivers will have to slow to 40km/h when driving past emergency vehicles at crash scenes from next month.

The changes, enforced by fines, come more than a decade after the death of an officer near Benalla during a routine traffic stop.

Senior Constable Rennie Page died after being hit by a car on the Hume Highway in April, 2005.

The decade-long veteran was hit from behind, six kilometres north of Benalla, while issuing a ticket in the emergency section of the northbound lanes.
