The two Sydney men, aged 20 and 22, had been travelling north on Tuesday afternoon at speeds labelled “senseless” by police.
Officers were alerted to the two BMW X5s south of Glenrowan and the pair were arrested at Bowser near Wangaratta.
Sergeant Michael Connors said the vehicles had been clocked at 194km/h and 196km/h, with the driving considered to be criminal behaviour instead of traffic offences.
“They were arrested and brought back to the Wangaratta police station for an interview,” he said.
“They’ve been interviewed for very serious offences.
“Charges are still pending and we’re trying to track down witnesses.”
The men didn’t give any explanation for the behaviour.
The black and white vehicles were impounded for 30 days and the men will likely receive court summons.
Sergeant Connors said it was rare to detect such high speeds.
“This is why police pull out all stops to stop this behaviour before it happens,” he said.
“We are disgusted to see speeds like this and we just shake our heads and ask why.
“It just doesn’t make any sense.
“It’s just absolutely ridiculous.
“For me, they’re road criminals.”
Police had been conducting an operation on the freeway when the offences were detected.
Sergeant Connors urged anyone who had seen the drivers to contact the Wangaratta station to assist the investigation.
The vehicles were pulled over about 2.30pm.
“I can’t see how any common person can see this sort of behaviour as acceptable,” he said.
“I really question the intelligence of these people who think they can travel at this speed on a public freeway. The risk is not only to themselves but other road users, and the police out there doing their job trying to stop this behaviour.
“If anything goes wrong at that speed, death is the only outcome.”
