The Panthers enjoy the underdog status, but they might have already lost that tag after another big win, 63-25, against Wodonga.
“I’m really happy with it, obviously Wodonga’s a very young side, but we didn’t have Skye Hillier and we were also missing Rhi (Rhiannon Dolahenty),” Mathews said.
“It was really good for our girls to put together four quarters consistently and maintain that intensity, which we didn’t do at the start of the year, but we’re doing it now.”
The visitors skipped to a 10-goal lead at quarter-time and built on that margin in every term.
Lavington is the only unbeaten team with just a draw halting a perfect record.
It leads premiers Yarrawonga by that draw and the pair don’t meet again until the penultimate round.
“I think we probably enjoy being the underdogs and internally I think we believe we are as good or better than Yarrawonga, but we have to prove that and we have to do it on a grand final day,” Mathews said.
“I think what’s most exciting for us is, I believe, we’ve still got quite a bit of improving to do, so I really want to see what we can bring in the second half of the season.”
Centre Maddy Lloyd was best on court.
“Maddy has been playing brilliantly and she’s really found her feet in A grade, playing with a lot of confidence,” Mathews said.
Sarah Senini was also superb, posting 20 goals, while Alison Meani scored a round-high 43.
Sarah Thomas and Emily Dwyer were the pick of the home team.
Meanwhile, Albury has won a third successive game by five goals or less.
The Tigers pipped Corowa-Rutherglen, 40-39.
It follows a four-goal win over Wangaratta Rovers and five against Wangaratta.
Coach Olivia Aughton was outstanding for the Tigers, helping to restrict boom spearhead Sophie Hanrahan to 29 goals.
Hanrahan was a clear leader in goalscoring after 10 rounds, with 354.
Jasmina Ainsworth also played well for the Tigers, while Georgia Schulz was the visitors’ best.
North Albury toppled Myrtleford, 45-33, to retain third spot.
Nakita Singe was terrific for the home side, while Grace Taberner again starred for the Saints.
Yarrawonga blasted Wangaratta Rovers, 61-26.
Lauren Mulquiney was the pick of the Pigeons, while coach Bridget Cassar landed 38 goals.
Sami Kreltszheim battled away valiantly for the Hawks.
And Wangaratta’s Amanda Umanski scored 35 goals in the 52-31 win over Wodonga Raiders, with Courtney Hillier Raiders’ best.
