Minutes earlier Nathaniel Stroh gave Culcairn a pulse with a critical goal.
The win puts Culcairn four premiership points and 22 per cent clear of seventh-placed Howlong with seven rounds remaining.
Co-coach Adam Eady described the win as huge for the club.
“It was really an eight-point game for us,” Eady said.
“We needed to win to keep our finals hopes alive and, besides an average second quarter, I thought we did pretty well.
“Howlong were good too.
“We have a tough run ahead so every win is crucial at this time of the year.”
Wingman Tim Hallinan played a blinder for Culcairn while Nick Wright did well in his head-to-head battle with Spider Matt McDonald.
Dane Hallinan and Tim Haines were also solid for the Lions.
Howlong were best served by speedster William Farrer and midfielder Tim Brook.
Undefeated Osborne motored home to defeat Rand-Walbundrie-Walla by 55 points at Osborne.
Trailing by two points at the last change, the Cats kicked 9.3 to 0.0 to quash any chance of an upset.
The late goal avalanche was sparked by Matt Rava who cut loose across half-forward while George Alexander and Marty Bahr also hit the scoreboard.
The Giants were brave for three quarters with Justin Gordon, Tom Simmons, Ryan Lavery and Brian Lieschke playing well.
Lockhart scored its second win of the season by defeating CDHBU by 37 points.
Led by Jordan Harrington, the Demons dominated the second quarter and refused to hand back the initiative.
