Following the charging of the Catholic Church prelate over historical sexual matters, Cardinal The Rise and Fall of George Pell was pulled from Victorian book shops.
On Thursday, Melbourne University Publishing recalled its book to ensure it did not prejudice a trial involving Cardinal Pell.
Dymocks Albury co-owner David Lewis said he would not voluntarily return Cardinal, even though his store is less than five kilometres from the Victorian border.
“It would be unwise because we would be putting ourselves in a position of censorship and that’s not where I want to be,” he said.
“We will continue to stock it, but we won’t make a song and dance about it, we wouldn’t be asking people if they’re from Victoria (when they buy it).”
Mr Lewis said the book, written by ABC reporter Louise Milligan and released in May, had not been a hot item.
“It hasn’t sold a lot,” Mr Lewis before suggesting it had limited interest, particularly among Catholics.
Edgars Books and News owner Mark Rosenow will follow the withdrawal order at his Wangaratta store.
He said it had been in the top ten sellers at his shop.
“There’s just been general interest….there’s been some curiosity to see what it’s about,” Mr Rosenow said. “Because the cardinal had never been charged there’s been a lot of controversy and people are interested in another view of it.”
Milligan had said: "If Cardinal Pell is charged, my book will be withdrawn from circulation in the Victorian jurisdiction and will only be reissued at the conclusion of that process."
