More than 10,000 Border residents are experiencing rental stress with few low-rent options on the market.
The 2016 Census revealed 12.5 per cent of Albury residents and 11 per cent of Wodonga residents are spending more than 30 per cent of their household income on rent.
These 10,713 residents meet the Productivity Commission’s definition of households in rental stress.
Border residents risk being priced out of the rental market due to a lack of affordable housing currently on the market.
The median rent in Wodonga in 2016 was $250, but 21.5 per cent of household had a income of $650 per week or less.
Those households could only afford $195 a week in rent, leaving them competing for affordable rentals.
Only three, properties in Albury or Wodonga with three or more bedrooms were available for $195.
One popular housing website lists eight properties available under $195 a week in Wodonga.
Albury’s median rent was $231, but nearly a quarter of households, 24.5 per cent, earned less than $650 a week.
Just over 50 properties were listed available for rent at under $195.
