In a tight call against Yarrawonga hardman Drew Barnes, Mackie polled 10 votes with Barnes one further back.
“He (Mackie) is a hard man, yeah, I think that’s a fair call,” Albury co-coach Shaun Daly said when quizzed on the outcome.
“I’ve played a lot of footy with Joel and he’s certainly one of the hardest players you’ll play with.
“I’d much prefer him on your side than against you, that’s for sure.”
Daly himself was third with six votes, while Myrtleford’s Brad Murray (five) and emerging Lavington midfielder Jack Nunn (four) rounded out the top five.
Two-time Morris medallist Mackie has been one of the league’s most tigerish performers for a decade.
“When he’s in the middle you are always pretty confident you’ll get a really good contest at the footy, whether he’s going to win it or someone else gets it,” Daly said.
