Finding books that appeal to “reluctant readers” was one of the aims of the school holiday workshop hosted by the Albury-Wodonga Dyslexia Support Group recently.
And there was no doubt Bethanga author Susan Berran had her young audience captivated as they sprawled on comfy cushions at Albury’s Retro Lane Cafe.
The 25 children devoured her “hilariously gross” stories and learnt, step-by-step, how to draw one of her popular characters, Fluff Butt.
Dyslexia support group co-founder Wendy Dallinger said the idea for the session came about after a parent spoke of her son coming home and actually being excited about a book.
“It was one of Susan Berran’s books and we decided to host a kids’ morning, which we promoted through the group,” Mrs Dallinger said.
“Susan told them stories and helped them draw Fluff Butt by starting with a ‘monkey’s bum' – it was a multisensory experience and the kids lapped it up.”
