But it wasn’t long before he was representing his country in the sport.

“When I was diagnosed (with retinitis pigmentosa) at 16, I said, ‘I don’t want to play blind cricket’, but you get into it and you love it,” he said.

“I was at the gym and dad was talking to Daniel Searle, and he said to come and have a go.

“I didn’t know what I was doing; I didn’t really know cricket, but it was a good experience and I met new people.”

Kent plays for the Blind Cricket ACT team, who are holding their first training camp for the year and a come and try day this weekend.

“It’s open to anyone – I’ve had a couple of phone calls during a week, but it was um and ah,” he said.

“I think it is a confidence thing, but people just need to come and have a go at it.”

The team is made up of a mixture of totally blind, poor-partially blind and partially sighted players.

Blind Cricket ACT president Brian Connolly said potential teammates were out there – it was just a matter of finding them.

“Recruitment is hard at the moment; it’s tapping into the disability sectors and finding out who would be interested,” he said.

“Many people feel they can’t play sport because they’re vision impaired, but we like to make them feel equal – we’re all in the same boat and love to get out there.

“The New City Cricket Club have allowed us to use their facilities, which has been great so we haven’t had to fork out financially.”

Connolly said all were welcome to attend, and with the first training camp for the year, it would be a good opportunity for the ACT team to get together again.

“We have a national tournament in Geelong again in January and a few of us from the ACT team will be looking to head to the 40/40 in New Delhi,” he said.

“It’s an opportunity for the current players to brush up their skills – it’s going to be a great weekend.”
