It was a chilly morning for local member Sussan Ley to take the shovel for the symbolic start of the Lavington Sports Ground redevelopment.

The redevelopment is the first step in the $9 million plan to build new multi-purpose playing fields, new amenities, a major grandstand extension and other improvements.
“When this first stage is completed we’ll be in premier position to host important regional and state sporting events, including high-level junior carnivals. By encouraging more families to visit, our shops, restaurants and accommodation services will benefit, which is great news for the entire community,” mayor Kevin Mack said.
The work is being carried out by the Melbourne-based Depan Group, which has been tasked with the demolition of an old house in Centaur Road, significant earthworks and levelling of the site, construction of the sports field base with a couch grass surface, and associated infrastructure, including lighting towers.
Local MP Sussan Ley welcomed the start of the works, adding the Commonwealth’s contribution of $4.025 million was much more than a cash grant.
“This funding recognises and helps maintain Albury-Wodonga’s reputation as regional Australia’s sporting capital - Lavington has played a key part in this, but the complex also needs further investment and development to grow the story,” she said.
