Victorian state government and local funding has allowed the network, in partnership with Parklands Albury-Wodonga, to install 75 additional nest boxes built by the Thurgoona Men’s Shed this year.

The final 10 were put up along the Murray behind Gateway Village by Parklands ranger Shane Vanderwerf on Monday.

“They say not to expect anything to be living in there within 12 months, but in Wodonga we’ve had success in just two months,” he said.

“There are plenty of big, old trees along the river for habitat and there’s lots of feed for them around here.

“We’re installing them along the river, going down into paddocks on the other side of the train tracks.

“With that connectivity that means we can track the squirrel gliders’ movements.”

They will be the first nest boxes designed specifically for the species in the area, and the data recorded by residents and rangers will be uploaded to the Atlas of Living Australia.

Landcare Network facilitator Anne Stelling said data gathered from across Wodonga would soon be live online.

“A lot of the funding has been for mapping and that’s about to be uploaded – it should be on the Atlas of Living Australia by the end of September,” she said.

“A lot of people have been interested in taking part.

“We’ll keep looking for funding to do more in the future.”
