We’re really happy with how things are going. It’s probably been a bit surreal to the honest. I’ve been fortunate to have had the support and hopefully the winners keep flowing.
- Craig Widdison
Since returning to the Border following a four-year training partnership with Peter Morgan at Whittlesea, Widdison hasn’t missed a beat in landing 14 winners in just over seven months.
“It’s been a great move coming back to Wodonga,” Widdison said.
“We’re really happy with how things are going.
“It’s probably been a bit surreal to the honest.
“We have been getting a few winners, my wife and kids are happy and people have been really supportive of us since we came back.”
Widdison’s recent run has been phenomenal with five winners coming at Wodonga (two), Flemington, Corowa and Bendigo in just over a month.
While As Bad As Tyson and Baby Zara’a wins at Wodonga on the weekend are close to Widdison’s heart, Willi Willi’s victory in the Silver Bowls Series final on July 8 provided him with his first city winner.
“That was fantastic,” he said.
“It was great to get a city winner and he’s a pretty good horse with plenty of improvement left in him.
“Hopefully we see the best of him next Autumn.”
Ridden by Craig Williams, Willi Willi ($14) scored by almost two lengths from the $3 favourite Diamonds Are with Solo Heart ($6.50) a long neck away third.
Widdison, who took over Brian Cox’s stables after he was disqualified last November for 3-½ years, presently has 18 horses in work.
During this time in the industry, Widdison has worked closely with some of Victoria's leading trainers including six years with multiple Group One winning trainer Robert Smerdon.
“I’ve been fortunate to have had the support since I came back to Wodonga and hopefully the winners keep flowing,” he said.
“We couldn’t have asked for anything more so far.
“We have some good horses in the stable with plenty of scope for improvement.”
Wodonga trainer Peter Maher has also tasted success in recent weeks with a winning double at Wagga on July 18.
Flying Cyril took out the Class One Handicap over 1000-metres and Chah Chah King was triumphant in the Benchmark 75 Handicap over 1400-metres.
He has also had several other placings this month.
