Joseph Keenes, 25, faced Albury Local Court on Tuesday after handing himself in to police on Monday.
The incident is alleged to have taken place at a home in Read Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Keenes is accused of driving from Hume Street to the house about 5am, armed with the shotgun, and is facing 16 charges.
Police say he banged on the front door, damaging it, while armed with the sawn-off double-barrelled firearm.
The 25-year-old bricklayer fronted court in a hoodie, with hair short at the front and long at the back, during a bail application.
The court heard the matter was a case of vigilantism, but the background to the incident was not aired.
Lawyer Camille McKay said that put it into a different category to someone going out and just “terrorising people”.
She argued Keenes should be released to continue working and paying rent.
“He’s a young man who needs to continue with his employment,” she said.
Alcohol was involved in the incident, she said, with Keenes said to have been drinking heavily in the day leading up to the confrontation.
The court heard the gun was not able to be used, and was held together by tape.
Magistrate Tony Murray said it was an “almost overwhelming case” by the police, and denied bail, before a man in the court shouted out in support.
“Howlong boys for life,” he said as Keenes was led out.
Magistrate Tony Murray told the man not to come back.
Keenes will return on August 8.
