On Wednesday Julie Edmunds finished her last shift at the Kiewa Street store, which has been as much a home as a workplace over the past 46 years.
Mrs Edmunds, one of six long-term Albury employees leaving Target, filled most roles over her time, including register supervisor and in the cash office.
But she’s also played football and basketball for Target and in 1992 helped the Albury team raise the most money to lead the state in a Target Red Cross fundraiser.
“We were determined to win but we were only a little store,” she said. “We used to wash cars and sell raffle tickets.”
Thirty-eight years ago Mrs Edmunds trained Janene Whitty, who also leaves Target this week.
“I was still at school … and I just got a job wrapping on the registers,” Mrs Whitty said. “It was just an eight-week job until after Christmas, but they kept me on and I’m still here today.”
The women witnessed expansion, refurbishments and also worked in the former Target cafe.
“They were the best doughnuts,” Mrs Whitty said. “We used to manually write out everyone’s pays on slips of paper and count the cash out.”
“That was fun doing that,” Mrs Edmunds added.
Target provided a first job for their children, while other family members have also been colleagues there over the years. Although sad to leave, the pair have many memories of good times.
“We all stayed there together, the whole six of us, because we really enjoyed our job and really enjoyed our friendships,” Mrs Whitty said.
