Emergency services were called to Garoogong Road about 6.15pm on Wednesday.
The vehicle was engulfed by flames by the time firefighters and police arrived.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze but the vehicle was destroyed.
The car, which was a red Chrysler Neon registered in Victoria, had been stolen by a man wielding a hammer on Saturday night.
The owner told police he had stopped on Barlow Street about 10.30pm and was approached by a man with the weapon.
He removed the keys and demanded the 20-year-old get out of the car, threatening the driver with the hammer.
The man got out and the offender drove from the scene.
Two other men ran through Melrose Park towards Wagga Road.
The main offender is described as being in his late 20s, six foot tall, of slim build with dark or tanned skin.
He was wearing a dark green hoodie at the time.
