The ABC radio team, which has been on air for 37 years, will perform on stage at Albury Entertainment Centre on Saturday August 19.
Ian Cover, who will be joined by songwriter Greg Champion and other Coodabeens, said it would mirror the Saturday morning radio program with ditties, banter and off-the-wall talkback.
“After 37 years we are on to a second generation and we run into people in their 20s who say, ‘Dad used to make us listen to you in the car and we had no idea what you were talking about and over time we’ve listened to you and now we understand you’,” Cover said.
“Without wanting to be controversial or too deep and meaningful I think so much of the football media focuses on the negative or the issues, whereas we’re just trying to enjoy it.”
The Coodabeens’ recognition of football beyond the AFL is seen as a key.
“The AFL should roster senior management or someone from the commission to go and attend a grassroots game every weekend, just to remind themselves there would be no elite competition sitting on top of the pyramid without all the grassroots clubs holding them up,” Cover said.
“You never see the $900,000 salary men from the AFL at a place like Kiewa-Sandy Creek where they struggle by and large to keep going with volunteers.”
While the Coodabeens appreciate tradition, they have not been unaffected by the digital revolution.
“When Greg first started doing the songs he used to get half a dozen or 10 letters a week with suggestions,” Cover said.
“With the advent of email Champs would now get anything between 50 and 100 songs sent in.”
Show tickets are on sale at the entertainment centre.
