To mark National Tree Day celebrations, Wodonga Council staff, Landcare and Catholic College Wodonga students took to the reserve.
Clyde Cameron Reserve Landcare’s Bruce Nulty said some people had complained about noise levels since plants were removed.
“There used to be a whole lot of non-indigenous plants that council cleared a year ago, that we’re replacing today,” he said.
“It’s a bit of a relief – people grizzle that without the trees they get more traffic noise.”
Mr Nulty said the removed plants consisted of woody weeds including ivy and blackberry bushes.
Many Wodonga residents around the reserve received flyers produced by an unknown source, questioning council’s plan for the reserve.
“Are you frustrated, disappointed, angry, confused or upset at seeing more and more beautiful trees in Clyde Cameron Reserve cut down,” it asked.
Mr Nulty said the 400 new trees planted were native to the area and would help support the environment’s future.
“It’s biodiversity,” he said.
“They will encourage native insects and birds and other animals. A great example is the squirrel glider, out of ten nest boxes we already have one occupied.”
Catholic College Wodonga year nine students beautify the reserve once a week.
