Nathan Wakeling fronted Albury Local Court on four firearms charges this week.
The court heard he didn't realise a slug gun he owned was considered a firearm, and had spent two days in custody after his arrest.
Magistrate David Degnan put the incident down to “stupidity”, rather than someone flouting the law.
Wakeling was placed on an 18-month good behaviour bond and was fined $750.
