The Bureau of Meteorology said Alpine regions could expect winds averaging 80 to 90km/h and peak gusts of 130km/h.
Bureau senior forecaster Stephen King said Saturday should be the windiest day this winter in Victoria.
He said winds of 60 to 70km/h were expected across the state, with a severe weather warning issued for many parts. Albury-Wodonga was not included in the warning, but Bright, Falls Creek and areas south of Corryong are affected.
Strong winds are predicted for Saturday morning and afternoon.
By Sunday morning the winds should have eased.
Mr King said the state was in for a warm weekend but it won’t feel very pleasant because of the wind.
