A pallet of old Telstra batteries were being transported at Colac Colac, near Corryong, about 5.40pm on Sunday.
The load fell off a truck and landed on the Murray Valley Highway, causing the sulphuric acid to spill.
Firefighter Brett Myers said an extensive clean-up was needed, which was difficult given the danger posed by the chemical.
The substance quickly killed grass on the side of the road and specialist breathing apparatus was needed by those on scene.
“Acid creates fumes and it’s also dangerous if you get it on clothing or skin,” Mr Myers said.
The clean-up continued on Monday.
