A Ford Territory station wagon was driven about one kilometre down Harris Road, a dirt road off the Lincoln Causeway, and abandoned underneath the Hume Freeway bridge on Tuesday night.
It was then set alight and completely destroyed by fire.
Firefighters were called to put out the blaze at about 11.30pm.
Wodonga police and CFA investigators returned to the scene Wednesday morning to look into what happened.
Detective Senior Constable Justin Foots said the victim told police she last saw the car at her Whitebox Drive home about 10pm and it was locked. “The next thing she’s getting a phone call from police, saying her car’s on fire,” he said.
Police did not have evidence the car fire was connected to a series of thefts across the Border.
Anyone with information on the fire or who saw the Ford Territory being driven in Wodonga is asked to contact police on (02) 6043 2600.
Meanwhile, Wangaratta police have arrested a 31-year-old man in Seymour over an attempted armed robbery at the Old Town and Country Tavern in February.
Detective Senior Constable Jason Brown thanked the public for help to identify the alleged offender.
“We are pleased with the result and can reassure the public that all investigations of this magnitude and seriousness will be thoroughly investigated,” he said.
The man was bailed to appear at court in September.
