Daniel Sutton, 37, had broken up with the victim about a week before the incident, which started as a verbal argument.
The long-haul truck driver still lived with the woman and they began to fight on April 2.
Sutton took the hot kettle about 9.35pm and held it in her lap and tipped it, but nothing came out.
He then grabbed the cat by the neck and pushed the victim in the shoulder, causing her to fall onto a couch.
The Wodonga Magistrates Court recently heard Sutton was reacting to the woman, who he said had grabbed his hair.
He was placed on an adjourned undertaking and must attend therapy as part of his sentence.
