And so he got on the turps through buying a gold class ticket at Albury’s Regent Cinemas, but sure enough he did it all over again.
Told by a cinema employee that the third drink he was buying was his last because he had downed the first two so fast, Settle stole a case of beer from a store room.
It all resulted in Settle yet again fronting Albury Local Court.
Magistrate Chris McRobert said it appeared the only way Settle could truly change his ways was by having a suspended jail sentence hanging over his head.
And Mr McRobert was sceptical of Settle’s claim, through his solicitor, that he had given up the grog.
Settle pleaded guilty to larceny, a charge that put him in breach of a bond previously imposed by the court on a charge of resisting police.
The 29-year-old was handed a nine-month jail term, suspended for nine months.
Mr McRobert warned Settle that if he did anything that brought him back to court there was “no doubt” he would be going straight to jail.
The court was told that Settle was banned from all licensed premises attached to the Albury Liquor Accord because of his “intimidatory” behaviour.
His latest offending took place after he went to the cinemas in Dean Street on April 20 about 9.30pm.
The North Albury man bought a ticket to The Fate of the Furious, then got a Jack Daniels and cola. He sat down, downed his drink and then got up again to buy a stubby of beer.
He did not even settle in his seat, quickly downing the drink and returning to the bar to buy another beer – but with the warning it would be his last.
Settle left the cinema about 11pm and was seen on CCTV to walk into a storeroom and grab a case of beer valued at $168 that he left in a back car park.
He then walked to a taxi rank and hailed a cab to retrieve the beer, but the theft had already been discovered by cinema staff.
