More than 70 students from Bright Secondary College, Murray High School, Wodonga Middle Years and Wodonga Senior Secondary College gathered on the grounds of the latter for a Marngrook tournament, which had been organised by a group of students from WSSC.
One of those students, Taylor Morey, said it was important to celebrate Indigenous traditions.
“Our teacher (Brooke Musgrave) offered the idea to us and we thought it was great, it was a really good way to bring everyone together,” the 17-year-old said.
“We placed a lot of importance on using Aboriginal terminology while we were playing the game.
“It's been an exciting day and we're really proud of it.
“We don't celebrate these things enough – a lot of kids on our group didn't realise AFL came from Marngrook.
“It's all about raising awareness of Indigenous culture and the game as well.”
