The group was formed in 1994 with a core group of landowners passionate about improving their farms, their environment and their community.
Additional support through the NSW Government’s Local Landcare Coordinator Initiative has allowed the group to emerge again as a focal point for local engagement and activity.
President Simon Wilksch said, “The purpose of Culcairn Landcare Group has always been to provide an avenue for like-minded landholders and community members to get together and keep up to date with emerging information and resources to help manage our land in a sustainable and viable way.
“It’s always been a great place to get together as a community and share information and deal with shared issues and we have a core group of passionate members who are determined to see the group grow and thrive again,” he said.
Recent group initiatives have included a soils workshop looking at the impact of acid soils on cropping and pasture production, a dung beetle workshop, agronomist meetings and the donation of nearly 1000 trees and shrubs to local properties, schools and gardens.
Local Landcare Coordinator Paula Sheehan said, “It’s great to see the Culcairn group firing up again and just shows that despite challenges faced by groups from time to time Landcare is resilient and enduring model for participation.”
On Wednesday August 16, the Culcairn Landcare Group will be hosting its Annual General Meeting and the committee welcomes all past members, as well new members and new ideas.
The group are offering a free meal at the Culcairn Hotel for anyone who signs up membership at the AGM.
