Wangaratta Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre is set to host more than 450 swimmers and 800 spectators across the weekend.
The annual running of the short-course championships has been awarded to Wangaratta and the Ovens and Murray Swimming District for 2017 and 2018, the third two-year stint on the region since 2003.
This year's meet will mark the seventh time the championships have been held in Wangaratta since the opening of the indoor 25 metre pool in 2002.
Elite swimmers from across the state will converge from Saturday, with the Traralgon Swimming Club the team to beat.
The Gippsland-based club is set to have 62 swimmers competing this weekend, one of the biggest squads to travel for the event.
The Ovens and Murray have frequently hosted major state events.
The short course championships were last held in Wangaratta in 2013, while the long-course event was held in Wodonga in 2014.
That event was the first time the then newly-constructed WAVES facility was used.
Fifteen clubs from the central and southern Ovens and Murray districts are expected to compete this weekend.
The first session starts on Saturday at 10am.
