Thompson played in the 2-1 away win over Springvale on Saturday, but will miss the final round next weekend due to family commitments – making it his last official appearance for the club.

The 38-year-old played for Australia 54 times and had more than 200 appearances for Melbourne Victory.

Murray coach James Coutts admitted Thompson has been a great ambassador.

“He's played in a lot of games and it proves he's not just here for the glitz and glamour,” Coutts said.

“It's a big commitment travelling up from Melbourne, but he's represented the area as a local player.

“He talks about the pathway (to professional soccer) a lot and not having it as a kid.

“Hopefully he's inspired the next batch of young players coming through the system.

“We thank him for his efforts and who knows what happens next year.”

Murray United corporate director Pedro Afonso admitted Thompson’s commitment to the club has exceeded all expectations.

“We were only expecting him to play two or three games, but he ended up playing three quarters of the season,” Afonso said.

“We're just happy to have him as a member of our club and our history.”

Afonso added Thompson will stay involved with the club as a mentor and is open to playing guest games such as the FFA Cup, but is looking forward to spending more time with his family.
