Adam Jay Azzi, 43, is accused of stabbing Lloyd Frederick Kennedy to death in Lavington last November and attempting to kill his friend.
Police also allege Azzi possessed 0.86 grams of ice and a box cutter when he was apprehended.
The matter was heard briefly in Albury Local Court on Monday, with the 43-year-old appearing by video link from Long Bay Hospital.
The matter was largely procedural, with the court told details about serving briefs of evidence and timetables for future hearings.
The court heard there was a “very substantial” amount of information in the matter.
Azzi appeared calm and polite during the hearing, sitting with his hands neatly crossed.
The court heard there would be a better idea of how the case would progress by December.
Azzi told magistrate Tony Murray he understood what had occurred, with his next court appearance due on October 9.
Mr Kennedy was pronounced dead in hospital following unsuccessful attempts to resuscitate him outside a house in Webb Street on November 6 last year.
