Lamb numbers eased and the quality was plainer after 40mm plus of rain in the supply area.
New season lambs numbers improved and there was a good run of trade weights and more heavy lambs offered. A few extra light weight store lambs were also offered. Old lamb quality was mixed, with fewer heavy weights and plenty of trades and secondary lambs. Merino lambs were well back in volume. The market was dearer and buyers were after heavier weights.

Carcase prices ranged from 640c to 660c/kg cwt. Old lambs were $9 to $15 dearer again, the heavier lambs having the largest increase. Trade weights ranged from $119 to $148/head. Heavy old lambs $146 to $166 and extra heavy lambs reached $186/head. Most averaged between 610c and 640c/kg. Merino lambs sold between $116 and $135/head. Hoggets made to $140/head.
Mutton numbers eased and mostly medium and heavy ewes were penned. Most sold from $4 to $8/head dearer. Medium weight ewes ranged from $85 to $102/head. Heavy crossbred ewes sold from $105 to $135/head. Most averaged 400c to 435c/kg.

Sheep and lambs, Thursday, August 24
Numbers lifted and quality was again outstanding with just over the 11,400 new season lambs offered. Old lamb numbers were similar and quality was very good over trade and heavy categories.
Prices were solid over all categories as both domestic and export processors were keen to acquire numbers. All buyers were present and operating. Store orders were limited.
New season lambs were in greater numbers and quality was excellent over all trade weight categories. Buyers were keen to make purchases with major domestic processors pushing the market a few dollars higher.
New season trade lambs sold from $128 to $170/head to average 629c/kg cwt. Heavy young lambs were well supplied selling at $160 to $197/head. Light lambs to the processors were keenly sought, selling at $108 to $133/head. Young lambs back to the paddock made from $105 to $120.20/head.
The good quality supply of old lambs attracted stronger competition. The bulk of the old trade lambs were firm to $4/head dearer to average 616c/kg cwt.
