Only hours after signing power-hitter Ben Dunk, chief executive officer Clint Cooper said last year’s match was only the beginning.
“To say we are thrilled to be back is an understatement,” Cooper said.
“What we saw last year was an extraordinary rally of the troops around the region.
“It was something we have never seen in Big Bash in regional Australia.
“We are hoping to bring a bigger Big Bash if it can be bigger.
“I’m sure 10,000 was a dip in the ocean.
“I’m confident we will see significantly larger crowds this year.”
Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder will play a WBBL match for points at 2pm before the teams clash in a men’s practice match under lights at 6.30pm.
The matches will be played ahead of an $9 million redevelopment of the ground which will open the door for bigger national events.
Cooper and Sydney Thunder general manager Lee Germon have vowed to bring strong sides to the Border.
“It’s our intention to bring the best possible highest strength squads we can in both men and women,” Germon said.
“Bearing in mind in the men’s case we are only three days away from the start of our Big Bash campaign.
“We haven’t announced our team list, but I can assure you there will be some exciting talent and names led by our captain Shane Watson.
“In terms of the women’s squad, it’s very likely you will see the No.1 ranked T20 women’s cricket player in the world in Stefani Taylor.
“We’re very keen to bring Harmanpreet Kaur as well.”
Melbourne Stars will be captained by John Hastings with international cricketers James Faulkner, Peter Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell, Kevin Pietersen, Luke Wright and Ben Hilfenhaus in the 18-member squad.
Hastings has taken over from David Hussey.
Albury and Wodonga mayors Kevin Mack and Anna Speedie said they were delighted to welcome back some of the biggest names in cricket.
Tickets are now on sale.
