Pat Bourke will be on the nine-member council following the historic election on Saturday which has resulted in at least two fresh faces to local government, Corowa’s Shaun Whitechurch and Howlong's David Longley, also being voted in.
Mr Bourke is confident his ticket No.2, John Doyle from Oaklands, will also be on council with Mr Bourke also confirming he will stand for mayor.
“I will definitely contest the mayor position,” he said.
“It would be a big boost for us out here also going into the new council with the mayor position.
“It would give the area some confidence.”
Another obvious contender for mayor, Corowa’s Paul Miegel, is a strong chance to be elected.
Mr Bourke went into the election fearful of his area’s presence on the new council.
“It's a great result for the area and if we can get that second one there will be some added confidence,” Mr Bourke said.
“It was so, so important for this area to have representation and I don’t think people realise how big that was.
“When you look at the populations and the other differences we were right up against it.
“It would be brilliant to have three on council and that was the mix we were talking about pre-merger.
“Who knows where the preferences are going to go.”
Mr Bourke said Mr Doyle would be a great addition to council with his strong rural background.
He also served on the final term of the former Urana Shire.
“He is level-headed, a sound thinker and a very loyal sort of bloke,” Mr Bourke said.
“He is also a very passionate man.”
