This month The Cerebral Palsy Alliance are holding Steptember.
Being a worldwide fundraiser, it challenges people to exceeds 10,000 steps per day, improving overall health and raise much needed funds.
The Cerebral Palsy Alliance is a not-for-profit organisation that assists people with Cerebral Palsy and their families to lead a comfortable, independent and inclusive life.
They also help fund research into better treatment options for people living with Cerebral Palsy.
WHAT IS CEREBRAL PALSY?
Every 15 hours a child is born with Cerebral Palsy.
It is the most common physical disability in childhood and currently there is no cure.
It is caused by damage to the brain that occurs either during pregnancy, childbirth or up to one month old.
Degrees of Cerebral Palsy range from mild to severe.
All degrees of the disability will involve movement and posture control.
The Cerebral Palsy Alliance puts the financial cost of Cerebral Palsy at around $43,000 per year. These costs can be for therapy, doctors, medications, care and equipment.
WHAT WE CAN DO
Physiotherapists are part of a team of health professionals that work together to reach the best possible outcomes for Cerebral Palsy patients.
Physiotherapy plays an important role in helping children, teens and adults living with Cerebral Palsy to achieve their goals and live their life to the fullest.
Research has shown that Physiotherapy intervention greatly improves quality of life by focusing on skills that aid everyday function and mobility.
Treatment may involve prescription of equipment, manual therapy, exercise prescription and assistance to improve motor skills.
At Healthfocus, we have Physiotherapists working closely with members of the community and their families that are living with Cerebral Palsy.
So we were keen to jump on board for Steptember!
We have divided into teams of four with each of us trying to top 10,000 steps every day.
It isn’t always as easy as you may think!
