Partners in business and life, Jarrod Elliott and Tammie Taurins opened their first venture together – a funky cafe in Yarrawonga’s main street – a little more than two years ago.
Mr Elliott said the couple toyed with different names before settling on Hardluck Coffee Co.
“We thought Hardluck sounded a bit edgy and a bit different,” he said.
With backgrounds in customer service and hospitality, the Yarrawonga couple wanted to offer the tourist town quality coffee and comfort food done well.
The menu features wholesome soups, interesting toasties and wholefood treats.
“We wanted to do it simple and do it well,” Mr Elliott said.
Mr Elliott said their coffee came from Melbourne roastery Allpress Espresso.
“Their process of roasting the beans is the standout,” he said.
“They use the air roasting system, which produces a superior product in my opinion.”
What's your favourite dish, Jarrod?
I love toasties. If it was my last meal on Earth it would be a toastie. It would be our bacon toastie here – bacon, Gouda cheese, sun-dried tomato and barbecue-style chutney on Milawa sourdough.
What are the staples in your pantry?
Paprika, chilli flakes, salt and pepper, good olive oil – we use Rich Glen Olive Oil as our go-to because you can’t get fresher than that.
What is your recipe standby?
What's the biggest product discovery you have made in cooking?
Dill cucumbers and sauerkraut.
What's your secret vice?
Our house-made lemon cake. Someone’s got to eat the ends of the lemon cake most days!
What's your favourite cooking utensil?
One guess!? A grill!
What is your most unforgettable meal and where?
We had a fancy degustation with matching wines and standout local produce at Coriole Winery (McLaren Vale) in the summer holidays.
What did you have for dinner last night?
Warm homemade potato salad with salami, a citrus and strawberry salad and gourmet sausages.
What are you drinking?
With dinner, it’s Bobbie Burns Shiraz. For coffee, I drink long blacks and Tammie drinks piccolo lattes.
