Brad Jones Racing’s No.4 car, driven by Todd Hazlewood in Saturday’s co-driver race, was hit from behind at 260km/h, spinning and hitting the tyre wall at an estimated 220km/h as it flipped and rolled numerous times.
Every panel was torn from the car in one of the most horrific accidents in Australian racing history.
“I’m just relieved and happy that Todd was able to walk away from that,” team boss Brad Jones said.
The teams other two cars couldn’t manage to get on the pace all weekend, but good strategy and some outstanding driving from Tim Slade and Ash Walsh saw them move from 17th on the grid to finish ninth, while Nick Percat started 10th but dropped back to 22nd.
Albury-born Dave Reynolds described his car as a “jet” after qualifying third for the big race, but a tyre blowout on lap 69 cost him 11 spots to see him finish 17th.
